Initially arising out of ska, Jamaican Dancehall music started in the late 1980s as a unique style. First sounds were rooted in riddims spun by sound systems, highlighting DJs rapping upon basic instrumental loops. The form rapidly evolved blending aspects of hip hop and electronic music , paving the way for a more electronic sound and faster pace.
